Could I interest you in a cigar?

NIXON: Sure, I think I smoke cigars ... maybe ... I don't know.

(CHURCHILL hands a cigar to NIXON, who bites off the tip and lights it.)

NIXON: We were probably alive at the same time.

CHURCHILL: Indeed, my boy, indeed. I had something to do with World War II and I think maybe you fought in it.

NIXON: I'm not sure if I did.

CHURCHILL: There's not that much more about me that everyone knows.

NIXON: I once held up my hands and formed two peace signs. I did that.

CHURCHILL: Margaret Thatcher is someone else from England. I don't think I had anything to do with the Mayflower. That was before me.

SALINGER: Everything is phony.

COLUMBUS: It was 1492 when I found America. That year is definitely correct.

SALINGER: Were there Indians here when you got here?

COLUMBUS: Yes. I discovered them, too. I don't think I had Thanksgiving with them, though. Those were Pilgrims. Maybe I was a Pilgrim, but probably not.

SALINGER: I wrote one book and nobody ever saw me again.

COLUMBUS: There were no books when I was alive.

Abraham Lincoln and Hitler

HITLER: Kill the Jews.

ABE: Free the slaves.

HITLER: Kill everyone, especially the Jews.
Now that the campaign trail has winded down, Ive been able to get back into some of my favorite hobbies. Reading and generally being a drink-wielding dance-floor-tearing blury-photo- snapping all around party machine. Little do most people know that the latter is all an effort to sustain my cover as an undercover shitty venue detective. This night - Boogie Fever (ferndale, mi)

Right off the bat, I was concerned that since we were young attractive english speaking suburbanites, our cover was going to be immediately blown. Luckily, a round of vodka shots had our faces flush and ready to blend in.

After stepping up to the disco floor and throwing down some moves, I looked around the room and was surprised at all of the celebrities I spotted:
Tina Turner!
Jermaine (maybe Tito?)
Why the Greens are Dumb

Laura Berman

Republicans can thank Green Party for Senate victories

K yle McBee, a Green Party candidate for state Senate, can take credit for helping the Republicans keep control of the chamber.

This McBee was a key man, mysterious but influential.

His campaign was so quiet few knew he was even running. He only occasionally responded to voter information questionnaires, and did so with little personal detail.

At one political forum that I moderated, which included the other 13th District Senate candidates, he was a no-show, although other members of his party appeared.

So discreet was McBee's candidacy that even other Green Party candidates, like two-time would-be governor Douglas Campbell, can't quite place him. "I've met him," Campbell told me. "But I don't remember too much about him."

Dems not happy about it

But even without visible campaigning or a bio, McBee was an alternative in an earth-scorching, multimillion-dollar race for the Oakland County 13th District seat. Perhaps, in a vitriolic and mailbox-cluttering race, even low-profile McBee could exert a unique appeal.

When it was all over, John Pappageorge, a career military man and former state representative, won out over Andy Levin, scion of the Levin political dynasty (Sander, Carl et al.). The margin was 776 votes.

McBee's cut was barely 3 percent of the vote, a slim total of 3,118 votes. It wasn't enough to be a contender. But it was more than enough to give Pappageorge the victory. Put another way: Those left-leaning protest votes were four times the votes Levin needed to win.

"The Green Party gave us four years of Bush, now they're giving us four more years of a Michigan Republican Legislature," growled David Fink, an Andy Levin supporter and former Granholm official.

McBee and one other Green Party candidate -- Lloyd Clarke in the Saginaw-area 32nd District -- played spoilers so effectively they kept the Senate in Republican hands. (In the 32nd district, Democrat Carl Williams lost by 520 votes; Clarke the Green got 2,326).

McBee, who described himself as a lifelong social activist on a League of Women Voters form, is for transgender rights and anti-war -- not exactly Republican motifs.

Is he in hiding?

When I called McBee at his Royal Oak phone number to discuss the election, I got only the amateurish, but affecting, wail of a blues harmonica being played. Wah, wah, wah.

Irony intended?

McBee's e-mail address was also idiosyncratic. And as of my deadline Wednesday, there was no response.

So I cannot tell you how McBee felt, the morning after the election, having lost but also having played a significant role in helping the Republicans keep their majority.

Instead, I asked Campbell, the Green Party candidate for governor. "If you get a minority of the vote, you should lose -- you deserve to lose," he said of the Levin effort. "Why should anyone think otherwise?"

An interesting question -- until you remember he belongs to a political party designed to lose.

You can reach Laura Berman at (248) 647-7221 or lberman@detnews.com.

I leave it even more committed that vision.

During this race, Mr. Pappageorge's campaign circulated at least sixteen separate outright lies and many more distortions of fact about my former employer, my views and my life. He even admitted to several reporters that he knew various allegations about me perpetrated to get him elected were false. Such cynicism harms the public's view of all politicians and the electoral process.

But I refuse to join in the cynicism or to opt out. The conduct of Mr. Pappageorge's campaign only heightens my interest in campaign finance and election reform and intensifies my desire to help create a more honest politics centered on real debate about the substantive issues at stake in any given race. And it only increases my desire to show that bipartisan politics is still possible and that, as Governor Milliken pointed out in this race, it is still crucial to effective governance.

Let me close by expressing my heartfelt thanks to my wife, Mary; my children Koby, Saul, Benjamin and Molly; my extended family; the Senate Democratic Caucus; my truly awesome campaign staff; the literally hundreds of citizens who volunteered in my campaign; and the over 1,400 people who contributed to it financially. All of you have given me an incredible gift of love and energy. Through all of your efforts, I emerge stronger and more committed to building a just society of broadly shared prosperity.

Thank you.
